Can Banff Handle Another Free Summer?

Free entry could return next summer, but Banff still has traffic and staffing questions to answer. Plus, cruise boat plans, the rescue-dog debate and a winter ice-bubbles tour.

Free entry would take one cost out of a summer holiday in Banff. The question is how the park handles the visitors once they're through the gates. The budget proposes bringing back the Canada Strong Pass in 2027, while traffic and staffing remain concerns. Dates are still to come.

On the lakes, there are plans to carry more passengers. Pursuit wants to move a 38-passenger boat from Maligne Lake to Minnewanka by 2028, with a new 56-passenger vessel serving Maligne, subject to approvals. That's a longer-term change for anyone following how the Rockies' visitor facilities are growing.

Alongside that growth comes a sharper debate about services. Two rescue-dog associations are challenging the cancellation of Banff's K9 programme, warning that losing trained dogs could slow avalanche searches and increase risks for rescuers.

For those whose next visit is this winter, there's something more immediate to plan: an Icefields Parkway and Abraham Lake ice-bubbles tour. The eight-hour outing includes Banff pickup, a walk to the Peyto Lake viewpoint, hot drinks and ice cleats, with someone else handling the winter driving.

📰 Banff Life

🏞️ Free Banff entry proposed for 2027. A Rockies holiday could come with one less expense: the federal budget proposes bringing back free park admission next summer. Dates haven't been announced, while Banff faces questions about traffic and staffing.

🚢 More cruise seats planned for Minnewanka. Pursuit's latest results and investment plans include moving a 38-passenger boat from Maligne Lake to Lake Minnewanka by 2028. A new 56-passenger boat would serve Maligne Lake, subject to approvals.

🐕 Rescue groups challenge Banff dog cuts. Two rescue-dog associations are urging Parks Canada to reverse the cancellation of its Banff K9 programme. They warn that losing trained dogs could slow avalanche searches and expose rescuers to greater risk.

🚉 Banff pushes for railway lands decision. The train station redevelopment plan remains under federal review, with expanded parking and a transport hub. Banff's free station lot was filling by around 11 am this summer, an hour earlier than in 2025.

🎭 Canmore musical offers pay-what-you-can opening. Six choir members compete for another chance at life in Ride the Cyclone at Canmore Miners' Union Hall, 18 to 28 November. Opening night is pay-what-you-can; other performances cost $35, with adult themes and language throughout.

🏔️ Climbers rescued from Mount Andromeda. After two climbers fell on 5 October, Parks Canada completed an 18-hour Mount Andromeda rescue in Jasper. High winds limited helicopter access, so rescuers climbed above them and used ropes to reach the injured pair.

🌦️ Banff has a damp Sunday before the sunshine returns. Sunday brings a few showers and a high of 8°C, so keep a waterproof layer handy. Monday offers blue skies and a high of 6°C, then Tuesday brings a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 6°C. Full Forecast Here

❓ Your Questions Answered

Can I visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake on the same day?

Yes. For lakeside walks, photographs and the Rockpile viewpoint at Moraine Lake, combining them makes sense. We'd set aside a full day from Banff so you're not rushing between buses.

A Parks Canada shuttle reservation covers both lakes. For the regular daytime service, park at Lake Louise Ski Resort's Park and Ride and take the shuttle to whichever lake you booked first. Use the included Lake Connector to reach the other lake, then return to the Park and Ride from there. You don't need two separate reservations.

Getting that reservation can be the difficult part: seats sell out quickly. Once you're there, the Lake Connector is first come, first served, so allow time for queues. Parks Canada advises that shuttle waits can reach an hour during busy periods.

We'd allow around 1½ to 2 hours at each lake for a relaxed look around, plus transport and waiting time. If you want to hike to Lake Agnes or Larch Valley, separate days give you more breathing room.

Without a car, a Roam Reservable Super Pass combines travel from Banff to Lake Louise with access to the Lake Connector. An ordinary Roam ticket doesn't include that connection.

This is a summer and early-autumn outing, generally June to mid-October. Moraine Lake has no winter sightseeing shuttle.

Our guide to reaching Moraine Lake explains the shuttle, bus and tour options.

Icefields Parkway & Abraham Lake Ice Bubbles

Leave the winter driving to a local guide on this eight-hour trip along the Icefields Parkway. Explore Abraham Lake's frozen bubbles and walk to the Peyto Lake viewpoint, with Banff pickup, hot drinks, ice cleats and hiking poles included. Snowshoe and skate hire cost extra.

🥾 Two Kananaskis trails listed as open again. Bill Milne and Ribbon Creek are listed open in the updated Rockies trail roundup, with previous warning and detour notices removed. Nearby Troll Falls and Upper Troll Falls still carry ice warnings.

🥾 Out on the trails

Grassi Lakes via the Upper Trail

A steady climb through the trees brings you to Grassi Lakes, where two small lakes sit beneath a limestone cliff. Follow the broad Upper Trail both ways for an outing of roughly 4 km return. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours, including time beside the water.

The steeper Interpretive Trail is closed for winter. Alberta Parks warns that the Upper Trail can be icy even when paths in town are clear, and recommends microspikes and poles. You'll also need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass if you're parking at the trailhead.
