Spectacular Moraine Lake From The Rockpile Trail Banff National Park Alberta Canada

Every summer, one of the most photographed lakes in the world becomes accessible only by shuttle – and every summer, thousands of people are surprised by this.

If you're planning a trip to Moraine Lake in 2026, knowing how to book the Parks Canada shuttle isn't optional. It's the difference between standing at the edge of that turquoise water and sitting in your car, wondering what went wrong.

This guide covers the full process: setting up your account, surviving launch day, understanding your ticket, and what to do if you miss out.

Why You Can't Just Drive There

Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles year-round. This isn't a new policy or a temporary measure – it's been the reality for several seasons now, and it's not changing. The combination of limited parking infrastructure and the sheer volume of visitors the lake attracts made the old system unworkable.

The only ways in are a Parks Canada shuttle, Roam Public Transit with a Reservable Super Pass, a licensed commercial operator, or a government-issued accessible parking placard. If you're staying at Moraine Lake Lodge, you're the exception – vehicle access is included. For everyone else, the shuttle system is the way in.

Before Launch Day: Set Up Your Account

The 2026 shuttle season opens on Wednesday, April 15, at 8:00 am MDT – and if you haven't created your Parks Canada reservation account before that morning, you're already behind.

Go to reservation.pc.gc.ca and set up your account now. If you're prompted for Canadian banking information and don't have it, skip that option and use a GCKey instead. A GCKey is a free government login that anyone can use – you don't need to be Canadian, and you don't need a Canadian bank account. It takes about five minutes to set up.

Also worth doing in advance: locate the shuttle booking page within the reservation system. It sits under the “Day Use” tab, which is easy to miss when you're in a hurry on launch morning.

Launch Day: Step-by-Step

The booking process on April 15 moves fast and has no tolerance for late arrivals – to the website or otherwise. Follow these steps in order.

  • Log in to your Parks Canada reservation account before 7:30 am MDT. Use a computer if you can – the mobile experience under pressure is not your friend.
  • Once logged in, you'll be placed into a virtual waiting room. Stay there. The system is holding everyone in the same place until the clock hits 8:00 am.
  • At exactly 8:00 am, the system randomly assigns queue numbers to everyone already in the waiting room. Anyone who logs in after 8:00 am goes straight to the back – no exceptions and no appeals.
  • When you're through the queue, go to the “Day Use” tab – it's easy to overlook, so look for it specifically rather than hunting around the homepage.
  • Select your primary destination – Lake Louise Lakeshore or Moraine Lake – then choose a one-hour departure time block that works for your day.
  • Complete the booking. The shuttle is $8 for adults, $4 for seniors, and free for anyone 17 and under, plus a flat $3.50 transaction fee. Your national park entry fee is not included and must be purchased separately.
  • The moment your confirmation comes through, screenshot it or print it. There is no reliable cell service at the Park and Ride or at Moraine Lake, and you will need to show your ticket on the day.

Only 40% of the season's tickets are released on April 15. The remaining 60% come out on a rolling basis, exactly 48 hours before each departure date at 8:00 am MDT. If launch day doesn't go your way, the season isn't over.

Understanding Your Ticket

Where to Go on the Day

Lake Louise Ski Resort In Summer Banff National Park Alberta Canada
Lake Louise Ski Resort – Starting Point For Lake Louise/Moraine Lake Shuttle

Your shuttle departs from the Lake Louise Ski Resort Park and Ride at 1 Whitehorn Road, where parking is free. This is where you check in. Do not drive to the Lake Louise Lakeshore paid lot instead – if you park there, you won't be permitted on the shuttle.

The Lake Connector

Your reservation automatically includes access to the Lake Connector shuttle, which runs between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake every 30 minutes from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. This means a single ticket gives you the option to visit both lakes in one day.

The Connector is first-come, first-served, and you don't need to book a specific time – but you must check in at the Park and Ride first. That check-in is the gate that unlocks the Connector.

The last return shuttle to the Park and Ride departs at 7:30 pm. Miss it, and you're arranging your own transportation – which at Moraine Lake, 14km down a closed road, is an expensive problem to have.

Sunrise Options: The Alpine Start Shuttle

Stunning Sunrise At Moraine Lake

If you want to be at Moraine Lake for sunrise, Parks Canada runs an Alpine Start Shuttle at 4:00 am and 5:00 am. A few important differences from the regular service: this shuttle departs from the Lake Louise Lakeshore, not the Park and Ride. You'll need to pay the $42 daily parking fee at the lakeshore lot, and tickets must be booked by 5:00 pm the day before your visit.

Larch Season: Mid-September to Mid-October

The golden larch trees around Moraine Lake in autumn are one of the genuinely great things about living near the Rockies. The shuttle situation during larch season – roughly mid-September to mid-October – follows the same Parks Canada system described above. Book early; this is one of the busiest periods of the year.

If You Can't Get a Parks Canada Shuttle

The 48-hour rolling release is the most important thing people miss. Two days before your planned visit, at 8:00 am MDT, another batch of tickets becomes available. Set an alarm.

If that doesn't work, there are a few other legitimate routes in. Roam Transit's Reservable Super Pass on Route 8X runs from Banff to Lake Louise, and that pass includes access to the Parks Canada Lake Connector shuttle to Moraine Lake.

Commercial operators run direct shuttles and guided tours. These cost more than the Parks Canada shuttle, but they're a reliable alternative when the main system is sold out.

One workaround worth knowing: if Moraine Lake shuttles are fully booked but Lake Louise still has availability, book Lake Louise. Once you've checked in at the Park and Ride, you can use the Lake Connector to reach Moraine Lake from there.

Practical Information

Getting There

The Lake Louise Ski Resort Park and Ride (1 Whitehorn Road, Lake Louise) is your starting point. Parking at the Park and Ride is free and plentiful. It's approximately 50 minutes from Canmore and 45 minutes from the Banff townsite.

Shuttle Hours and Season

The Moraine Lake shuttle operates from June 1 to October 12, 2026. Regular daytime departures begin from 7:00 am, with the last return at 7:30 pm. The Lake Connector runs between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. Alpine Start departures run at 4:00 am and 5:00 am (must be booked by 5:00 pm the previous day).

Cost

Parks Canada shuttle: $8 adults, $4 seniors, free for ages 17 and under, plus a $3.50 transaction fee per reservation. A national park entry fee is required separately. Alpine Start visitors pay an additional $42 daily parking fee at the Lake Louise Lakeshore lot. Commercial operators range from approximately $35 to $99 return, depending on provider and time of day.

How Much Time to Allow

A half day is reasonable if you want to walk the Rockpile Trail and the lakeshore. A full day gives you time to reach Consolation Lakes or push further into Larch Valley. Factor in the shuttle journey – around 25 minutes each way from the Park and Ride.

Accessibility

Visitors with a valid government-issued accessible parking placard may access Moraine Lake Road by personal vehicle. Service animals are permitted on Parks Canada shuttles. Contact Parks Canada directly for specific accessibility requirements.

  1. Thanks for the information. What if I want reservations for two days? Do I need to get back in queue?

    • Hi Kevin, you shouldn’t need to get back in the queue. So long as you remain in the same session (i.e. don’t log out or close the tab) you should be able to select another day once you have added the first to your cart. Note that you only have 30 minutes to complete all reservations and pay. Jill
