I don't play golf. Never have. I've tried it – once, maybe twice – and while I can respect the skill and focus it takes, it's just not my thing. But here's the twist: I still make a point of heading up to the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course every spring when it opens. And honestly? It's one of my favourite ways to spend a morning in Banff.
This year, the Tunnel Mountain 9-hole course opened on May 2nd, and the full Stanley Thompson 18 is set to open May 9th. Even if you don't plan to swing a club, there's something special about being around when it all kicks off.
🌄 Why Go If You Don’t Golf?
Because it's stunning. Simple as that.
The Banff Springs course is built right into the landscape of Banff National Park. You're walking (or riding) through wide fairways that open up to mountain views in every direction. Mount Rundle towers above you, the Bow River winds alongside the course, and the air is filled with the kind of spring freshness that makes you want to stay outside all day.
There's a stillness here in the early hours that's hard to find elsewhere – especially once the trails and town get busy for the summer. It's not just the setting that draws me in; it's the atmosphere. Everyone's in a good mood. It's the beginning of a new season and there's a real sense of anticipation in the air.
🛺 Tagging Along Is Encouraged
Here's something I didn't know until recently: you can book a spot as a non-golfing rider. For a fee, they'll set you up in a cart with a warm blanket, a hot drink, and let you ride along while someone else plays. I tried it last fall with a friend who's an actual golfer, and it ended up being a relaxing, slow-paced cruise through the prettiest part of the Bow Valley.
No pressure. No scorecards. Just time outside in a place that feels a little surreal.
🏌️♂️ More Than Just Greens And Fairways
Even if you're not tagging along for a round, it's worth visiting for the practice area alone. You can book what they call the Driving Range Experience – designed for groups or individuals who just want to hang out and hit a few balls without committing to a full round. They'll give you rental clubs, range balls, and access to a private spot on the range. There's even a grill involved – burgers, fries, drinks, the works.
You don't need to know the difference between a 5-iron and a pitching wedge to enjoy it. It's about the views, the vibe, and maybe hitting one good shot just to see what the fuss is about.
🍔 Stanley’s Clubhouse: Come For The BBQ, Stay For The View
Even if golf is completely off your radar, Stanley's Clubhouse is a reason to visit. This year they're leaning into Southern BBQ, and it's the kind of menu that feels right after a morning spent wandering around in the mountain air.
The patio looks out over part of the course and the river valley beyond. I've brought visiting friends here just for a casual lunch and it's always a hit. It opens May 9th, same day as the full 18-hole course.
🏞️ A Classic Banff Experience – With More Just Down The Road
One of the best things about spring in the Bow Valley is that Banff isn't the only spot dusting off the tee boxes. Canmore's courses are starting to open, too – like Silvertip, Stewart Creek, and the more laid-back Canmore Golf & Curling Club. Even if you don't golf, these are scenic places to walk, ride, or simply enjoy a sunny afternoon.
If you're planning a visit to Banff this season, it's worth carving out a little time to explore further afield. The whole corridor between Banff and Kananaskis has that same balance of outdoor energy and mountain calm.
🧘 Final Thoughts
Even without picking up a club, there's something about being at a golf course in Banff that just feels good. Maybe it's the mix of fresh air, quiet space, and open views. Maybe it's the people. Maybe it's just that spring is finally here.
So yeah, I don't play golf. But I'll keep showing up anyway.
