Every winter, Ice Magic Lake Louise becomes more than a postcard. The frozen lake transforms into a glittering outdoor gallery where the air smells like pine, mittens are mandatory, and the ice itself becomes the star of the show. Welcome to the Ice Magic Festival at Lake Louise – the crown jewel of Canada's ice sculpture festivals, where creativity meets cold in the most spectacular way.
Ice Sculptures at Lake Louise: Art You Can Practically Feel Freezing
Imagine artists from around the world arriving at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, armed with chainsaws, chisels, and enough determination to carve dragons, castles, and mythical beasts from massive blocks of ice. Within days, they've created the iconic Lake Louise ice sculptures – detailed, delicate, and dazzling against the backdrop of the Rockies.
The lake's famous ice castle makes a grand appearance each year, becoming a favourite spot for photos, proposals, and the occasional snowball fight gone wrong. There's something almost unreal about standing inside a work of art that's slowly melting – it's fleeting, magical, and deeply Canadian.
Who Can Attend the Lake Louise Ice Magic Festival
Ice Magic at Lake Louise is part of SnowDays, Banff National Park’s annual winter festival celebrating ice, snow and cold-weather creativity.
For 2026, attendance at Ice Magic is limited and operates differently from other SnowDays events. Entry is complimentary, but access is restricted to specific groups.
Hotel guests
Guests staying at participating Banff and Lake Louise hotels (listed below) can attend Ice Magic, with tickets available through their hotel from 8 December 2025. Entry includes shuttle transportation to and from Lake Louise as part of the experience.
- Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
- Baker Creek by Basecamp
- Emerald Lake Lodge
- Lake Louise Inn
- Mountaineer Lodge
- Storm Mountain Lodge and Cabins
Local community access
Residents from Mînî Thnî to Field can attend during the local access period from 4 to 8 February 2026. Complimentary tickets can be reserved, and shuttle transport to and from the event site is mandatory.
Guided tour guests
Visitors attending Ice Magic as part of a guided tour are also eligible for entry, with transportation handled by the tour operator.
If you’re not staying at a participating hotel or eligible under the access rules, don’t worry. Banff is hosting the Art of Ice carving competition, which is equally impressive and much easier to access.
When and Where It All Happens

The Lake Louise Ice Magic Festival runs February 4-8, 2026, right on the shores of the frozen lake. By the opening day, all ice sculptures will be complete – no half-finished swans or mystery blocks, just pure frozen artistry waiting to be admired.
Admission is free, but tickets are required and must be reserved in advance. It's a good idea to secure yours early – ice may last a while, but patience in Banff parking lots never does.
Getting to the Festival
A shuttle service is required to access the Ice Magic Lake Louise site, helping to keep the area safe and serene. Once you're there, you can wander at your own pace, take in the sculptures, and watch sunlight shimmer through layers of crystal-clear ice.
And yes, it can get cold. Like, “my nose is now a popsicle” cold. But that's half the fun. Layer up, grab a hot drink, and lean into it – you're part of the experience now.
Why Ice Magic Is Worth the Chill
There's something quietly moving about the Ice Magic Festival. Maybe it's the craftsmanship, maybe it's the mountain light bouncing through frozen wings and icy walls. Or maybe it's just that, for a few days, Lake Louise becomes a real-life fairytale.
Whether you're chasing photos of the Lake Louise ice castle, admiring world-class ice sculptures, or just trying not to slip on your way to the cocoa stand, you'll leave smiling – and maybe with a few snowflakes in your hair.
