Not every good mountain day in Banff needs to involve a steep trail, sore calves, and a suspicious amount of trail mix. Sometimes the better plan is to let a gondola or chairlift do the hard work, then spend your energy on the views, a short walk, and maybe a decent lunch.
If you’re looking for the best sightseeing lifts around Banff and Lake Louise, there are four main options worth considering: the Banff Gondola, the Lake Louise Gondola, the Sunshine Village Gondola and chairlift, and the Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift. They all offer mountain views, but the experience is quite different at each one.
Some are better for first-time visitors. Some suit wildlife lovers. Some feel more alpine and adventurous. One is ideal if you want the views without the big crowds.
Here’s how they compare, and which one is most likely to suit your day.
Banff Gondola: best all-round choice
If you want the most complete and easiest sightseeing lift experience in Banff, start here.
The Banff Gondola takes you up Sulphur Mountain just a few minutes from town. At the top, you get sweeping views over Banff, the Bow Valley, Mount Rundle, and a whole lineup of peaks in every direction. It is one of those places that still gets a proper reaction, even from people who normally try to play it cool around mountain views.
What makes this one stand out is that it is more than just the ride. Once you reach the summit, there is plenty to do without needing to hike far.
You can walk the boardwalk toward Sanson Peak, spend time at the viewing platforms, and warm up or refuel indoors if the weather has turned from pleasant to aggressively alpine. Which, around here, is always a possibility.
This is the best choice for first-time visitors, families, and anyone who wants a simple outing with a big payoff. It also works well year-round, which gives it an advantage over some of the other seasonal options.
The main drawback is that it is popular. Very popular. If you visit in peak summer, expect crowds and plan ahead. If you can go earlier or later in the day, the experience is usually better.
Lake Louise Gondola: best for wildlife and wide-open scenery
If wildlife is high on your list, this is the one to look at first.
The Lake Louise Gondola has a more rugged feel than the Banff Gondola. It is less polished, less built-up at the top, and more about the setting itself. One of the biggest draws is the chance to spot wildlife on the slopes below.
This area is known as an active wildlife corridor, and it is one of the few sightseeing lift rides where people are just as busy looking down the hillside as they are staring out at the horizon.
The scenery is excellent too, with broad mountain views around the Lake Louise area and a more open, wild feel overall. In summer, it can also work well as part of a bigger day that includes Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, or a short hike nearby.
This is a strong option for visitors who want scenery with a slightly less polished resort feel, or for anyone already spending the day in the Lake Louise area.
It is also a good choice if you like the idea of a sightseeing ride that feels a bit more connected to the landscape and a bit less like a main attraction. That said, if you want the most rounded and straightforward experience, Banff usually still wins.

Sunshine Village Gondola: best for alpine lakes and high-elevation scenery
If you want high alpine scenery without doing a full mountain slog, Sunshine is hard to beat.
The Sunshine gondola takes you up to the village area, and from there the Standish Chairlift brings you even higher into proper alpine country. This is where the experience starts to feel a little different from the others. Rather than simply arriving at a viewpoint, you feel like you are entering the mountains in a more immersive way.
In summer, this is one of the best lift-assisted ways to experience the alpine landscape near Banff. The scenery around Sunshine Meadows is excellent, with lakes, open meadows, and wide mountain views that feel bigger and wilder than what you get from most roadside stops.
It is especially good for visitors who want a bit of walking and exploring without committing to a long or difficult hike.
If Banff Gondola is the easiest all-rounder, Sunshine is the one for people who want more of an alpine day out.
The main thing to keep in mind is that this one is more seasonal and a bit more dependent on timing and conditions. It is also less of a quick stop. If you go to Sunshine, it makes sense to give it a decent chunk of the day.
Best move: Use their shuttle from Banff and consider staying at Sunshine Mountain Lodge if you're feeling bougie. Book your ride here.
Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift: best for a quieter outing
Norquay is the quieter option, and for some people, that will be exactly the point.
Unlike the enclosed gondolas at Banff, Lake Louise, and Sunshine, Norquay is an open chairlift. That means you are out in the air for the whole ride, with unobstructed views over Banff and the surrounding mountains. It feels simpler, less produced, and a bit more old-school in a good way.
At the top, the views are impressive, and the Cliffhouse Bistro adds to the appeal. If your ideal mountain outing includes a scenic chairlift ride followed by lunch or a drink with a view, Norquay makes a strong case for itself.
This is a good pick if you want something a little quieter, a little less busy, and easier to fit into a half day. It also suits visitors who have already done the Banff Gondola or simply want a different perspective of the town.
The obvious catch is that it is open-air. If someone in your group is not keen on heights, wind, or having their feet dangling above the hillside, this may not be the relaxing mountain experience they had in mind.
Which Gondola Should You Choose?

The best choice depends on what kind of day you want.
If you want the easiest and most complete experience, go with the Banff Gondola. It is the most reliable all-round option and the simplest recommendation for most visitors.
If you want the best chance of spotting wildlife, choose the Lake Louise Gondola.
If you want the most alpine feel and the strongest sense of getting up into the mountains, Sunshine is probably the best fit.
If you want something quieter and less crowded, Norquay is well worth considering.
Our pick
If you only have time for one, the Banff Gondola is still the easiest one to recommend. It is convenient, scenic, and works for a wide range of visitors. It also feels like a complete outing rather than just a ride up and down.
That said, Sunshine is the one many mountain lovers end up talking about afterwards, especially in summer. It feels more like a proper alpine experience and less like a quick viewpoint stop.
So the best answer is slightly unhelpful, but honest: the Banff Gondola is the safest overall choice, while Sunshine may be the most memorable for the right person.
Very Canadian answer, really. It depends.
Tips before you go
Mountain weather changes quickly, even in summer, so bring an extra layer. A sunny forecast in town does not always mean warm conditions at the top.
Check opening dates and hours before heading out, especially for Sunshine and Norquay, which are more seasonal.
If you are visiting during peak summer, booking ahead is usually a good idea.
And finally, do not overthink it. There is no bad option here. You are going up a mountain in Banff for the views. The day is already off to a fairly strong start.

Thanks so much for such great information. One question please: we are visiting mid-September and have booked hotels in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper then back to Calgary to fly back home. Would this have been just as easy and less complicated to stay in Banff and commute up the Icelands Parkway? We plan to be there for 8 days. Thanks!
Hi Linda,
You can visit pretty much everywhere as a day trip from Banff. You can even do the Icefield Parkway and back in a day. However its around a 3.5 hour drive each way without stopping, and there’s masses to stop and see on-route. Personally, I would do at least one night in Japser so you can take your time with the drive. Apart from that, I would say either way works. Jill
