Canmore Folk Music Festival

August 1 - August 3
Festival At Centennial Park Canmore Alberta Canada

The Canmore Folk Music Festival is Alberta's longest-running folk music festival, founded in 1978 and celebrating 49 years in 2026. It takes place every year over the Alberta Heritage Day long weekend, in 2026, that is Saturday, August 1 to Monday, August 3. The festival is held at Centennial Park, located on 5th Avenue in the heart of Canmore, a short walk from the main street. An off-site Pub Stage is also hosted at Miner's Union Hall nearby. The festival is run as a non-profit organisation with a small year-round staff, a board of directors, and over 550 volunteers who collectively contribute more than 7,500 hours of labour across the weekend.

The festival draws a local, national, and international lineup of artists across folk and related genres and attracts an audience of over 5,000 people per day. The 2026 confirmed artists include AHI, Barney Bentall, Begonia, Cat Clyde, Miko Marks, The Felice Brothers, Sarah Harmer, Steve Poltz, Wild Rivers, William Prince, Ahmed Moneka, and Aladean Kheroufi, with more still to be announced. The main performance area is centred on the Stan Rogers Stage, which has a designated dancing zone to its right. There is also a separate Pub Stage at Miner's Union Hall off-site. In addition to the main weekend, the festival hosts Festival Friday – a free community concert on the Friday evening before the main festival opens, with times to be confirmed.

Festival opening hours are Saturday 9:30 am-11 pm, Sunday 9:30 am-11 pm, and Monday 9:30 am-10:30 pm. Tickets are available as full weekend passes or single-day passes, with pricing varying by category: Adults (ages 21-64), Youth (ages 13-20), Seniors/Students (ages 65+ or valid student ID), and Family Passes (2 adults + 2 youth). Children 12 and under are free, though a free pass still needs to be added at checkout for capacity tracking. Exact pricing for 2026 is not listed on the website – check canmorefolkfestival.com or the Showpass ticketing platform for current rates. Tickets are non-refundable but are transferable to another person. Tickets are purchased online via Showpass and delivered by email.

The festival is strongly family-oriented. The Little Folkies Area runs throughout the weekend and is a dedicated children's zone with hands-on crafts, games, storytelling, kid-friendly performances, juggling workshops, hula-hooping, temporary tattoos, a kids' open mic, and a Mountain Littles quiet area for babies and parents with a private nursing/feeding space and change station. Children must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult at all times in this area. The 2026 Little Folkies programme includes Juno Award-winner Al Simmons, puppet performers Entangled Puppetry, Alberta Parks interpreters, Canmore Theatre Works presenting Alice in Wonderland, juggling clowns Professors Bouquin and Boffin, and a craft tent where kids can build instruments for a jam session.

Seating at the main stage is BYO tarp or blanket, limited to 6×8 feet per group. Festival-style chairs are permitted but must be no more than 24 inches high to the top of the chair back, with a maximum leg length of eight inches. Taller lawn chairs are permitted in a designated area at the rear. Small tents are not permitted on site. A designated dancing zone operates to the right of the main stage, and from approximately 9:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday evenings the dance zone expands into the front tarp area for the final acts of each night. No pets are permitted within Centennial Park under Town of Canmore bylaws; licensed service dogs are the only exception.

Canmore is extremely busy on the August long weekend and parking is very limited and paid in the downtown core. The festival strongly encourages arriving by bike (secure bike parking is available on site via Canmore Community Cruisers), local ROAM Transit buses (Routes 5T and 5C, which are free within Canmore), or the Folk Fest Express – a chartered bus from Calgary (Crowfoot LRT Station) for CAD $35 round trip, departing at 8:30 am and returning at 11 pm Saturday and Sunday, and 10 pm Monday. The Banff Airporter also connects Calgary International Airport to the Canmore/Banff area. Accommodation across the Bow Valley books out months in advance for this weekend; the festival recommends booking as early as possible and points to nearby campgrounds including Bow River, Three Sisters, Tunnel Mountain, Wapiti (closest to site), and Spray Lakes.

Accessibility provisions include a drop-off zone adjacent to the main stage, a designated accessible seating area with wheelchair and tall chair groupings for clear sight lines, and free passes for personal care aides. St. John's Ambulance first aid is on duty for the full duration of the festival. The festival operates a Safer Spaces Policy committing to a harassment-free and inclusive environment. The festival has an active environmental stewardship programme including Towards Zero Waste initiatives. It is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, TD Bank, SOCAN Foundation, EPCOR, and a range of local and regional sponsors.
