Before you load the car, check what might affect your plans. A scenic drive is lovely. A scenic drive ending at a closed gate is a slightly different outing.

This roundup covers selected trail closures, wildlife warnings, road restrictions and visitor access changes across Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis, Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper. Each item links to the official information, including maps where available.

Conditions can change between newsletter issues. Check the linked notice before travelling and follow signs on the ground. A place missing from this list isn't confirmation that it's open.

## Banff and Lake Louise

**Johnston Canyon: trail and day-use area closed**

Johnston Canyon Trail and Day Use Area are closed for construction, including the washrooms and P1 car park. The notice runs from 13 October to 11 December 2026\. Check for confirmation before planning a visit around the expected reopening. [Official closure notice](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/bulletins/06d4ef61-a3c9-4b65-8dfc-66d056252d6c?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Banff Upper Hot Springs: maintenance closure**

The Upper Hot Springs are closed for annual maintenance from 13 October into early November. Parks Canada hasn't given an exact reopening date on its main visitor page. Keep the swimsuit on standby. [Official hot springs update](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/sources-banff-springs?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Moraine Lake and Lake Louise: summer shuttle season has ended**

Moraine Lake Road is closed for the winter. Parks Canada's 2026 shuttles to both lakes finished on 12 October. That doesn't mean Lake Louise itself is closed: check the current access options when planning your visit. [Moraine Lake road status](https://parks.canada.ca/apps/ParksNow/?ref=thebanffguide.com) and [official lake access information](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/parkbus/louise?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Skoki: bear warning and campground closures**

Parks Canada lists a bear warning covering the Skoki trails, including Hidden Lake, Merlin Meadows, Baker Lake, Red Deer Lakes, Deception Pass and Cotton Grass Pass. The notice describes a grizzly displaying bold behaviour and approaching people. Read the full advice and affected-area map before travelling. [Official bear warning](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/bulletins/74085a8f-8138-410f-8956-83929a79d6b8?ref=thebanffguide.com).

Hidden Lake and Baker Lake campgrounds are closed to camping after a grizzly entered campsites and investigated tents and gear. Both notices list 1 December 2026 as their end date; confirm reopening before planning an overnight stay. Trail access to both lakes remains open, subject to the bear warning. [Hidden Lake campground notice](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/bulletins/5a89b726-ad94-47b8-9733-ca8cc33b82c3?ref=thebanffguide.com) and [Baker Lake campground notice](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/bulletins/7f4985c2-c356-4910-bb61-e9885287a693?ref=thebanffguide.com).

## Canmore and the Bow Valley

**Grassi Lakes: one route closed, the other under a warning**

Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail is closed for winter because of unsafe ice flows. Grassi Lakes Upper remains open with an ice warning. Alberta Parks recommends suitable footwear, microspikes and poles for the Upper trail during colder conditions. [Official Canmore trail report](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/kananaskis-country/advisories-public-safety/trail-reports/canmore-and-area/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Cloudline and Highline: fireguard restrictions**

Cloudline and Middle Sister Access are listed as closed, while Highline is partially closed because of fireguard work. Montane Traverse also carries a warning about increased potential for falling and fallen trees following the work. Check your specific route rather than assuming the whole network has the same status. [Official trail statuses](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/kananaskis-country/advisories-public-safety/trail-reports/canmore-and-area/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Many Springs: closed**

Many Springs Interpretive Trail is closed until further notice because of hazardous trail conditions. Alberta Parks says crews are assessing the damage. [Official Bow Valley notice](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/bow-valley-pp/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Canmore Nordic Centre: check individual trails**

Fireguard work continues to affect access. The report updated on 31 October notes the seasonal closure of Cold Shoulder to protect a wildlife corridor. Check the latest report before choosing a route. [Official Nordic Centre report](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/kananaskis-country/advisories-public-safety/trail-reports/canmore-nordic-centre/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

## Kananaskis

Some Alberta Parks links open a park homepage. Expand "Advisories & Closures" to read the named notice.

**Bill Milne Trail: cougar warning**

A cougar warning applies between Mashee Way and Evan-Thomas Day Use Area after a cougar killed a deer nearby. It took effect on 27 October and remains in place until further notice. This is a warning; follow the precautions in the full notice. [Official Evan-Thomas advisories](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/evan-thomas-pra/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**High Rockies Trail: Spencer Creek bridge closed**

Rain damage has eroded the approaches to Spencer Creek Bridge. The bridge is closed, with a flagged bypass in place. Alberta Parks notes that the bypass may involve a short water crossing at times. [Official Spray Valley notice](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/spray-valley-pp/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Ribbon Creek: detour and construction activity**

Ribbon Creek Trail remains closed between the day-use area and the Link Trail junction because of a washed-out bridge. A temporary detour uses Terrace, Kovach and Link trails.

Separately, bridge-removal work is scheduled from 19 October to 20 November, or until further notice. Expect intermittent equipment movement on affected trails around Evan-Thomas and Ribbon Creek, and follow staff directions. [Official detour and construction details](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/evan-thomas-pra/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Peter Lougheed: continuing wildlife closures**

Alberta Parks still lists the Elpoca Day Use Area and Valleyview Road bear closure; that notice was updated on 13 October. Woolley Trail is also closed between the Wheeler/Meadow trails junction and Amos Trail because wildlife is feeding on a dead moose nearby. Check the notices and maps for the affected areas. [Official Peter Lougheed closures](https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/peter-lougheed-pp/?ref=thebanffguide.com).

## Yoho National Park

**Takakkaw Falls and Wapta Falls: seasonal road closures**

Yoho Valley Road, which provides vehicle access to Takakkaw Falls, is closed for the season. The 2 km Wapta Falls access road is also closed. The road closure and the trail's condition are separate things, so check both before setting out. [Official Yoho road and trail report](https://www.parcs.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/yoho/activ/randonnee-hike/etat-sentiers-trail-conditions?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Watercraft and fishing restrictions**

Watercraft use and fishing are prohibited across Yoho's waterbodies under an order ending on 31 March 2027, intended to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. The order includes exceptions for Emerald Lake rental canoes and authorised commercial operators; those exceptions don't confirm that a service is operating on your chosen date. ## Kootenay National Park

**Dog Lake and Numa Creek: trail closures**

Dog Lake Trail and Bridge are closed because the suspension bridge is damaged and unsafe. Numa Creek Trail is closed from Numa Falls Bridge to Numa Creek Campground because of a bridge washout and debris. [Dog Lake notice](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/kootenay/bulletins/9de303f0-53df-405b-9de8-2c56cf1b6f1a?ref=thebanffguide.com) and [Numa Creek notice](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/kootenay/bulletins/eb4c91d7-c95e-4d75-9106-10fd17ef232a?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Sinclair Canyon: pedestrian access restrictions**

The roadworks closure covers part of Redstreak Connector Trail and pedestrian access through Sinclair Canyon, including the viewpoint. The notice lists an end date of 30 November 2026\. Check the map for the precise boundaries and DriveBC for highway conditions. [Official Sinclair Canyon closure](https://www.parcs.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/kootenay/bulletins/959dc859-e638-4732-bb0a-620ad5af6e81?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Watercraft and fishing restrictions**

Kootenay also prohibits watercraft use and fishing across its waterbodies under an order ending on 31 March 2027, with an exception for authorised commercial operators. The restriction is intended to prevent aquatic invasive species spreading into the park. [Official water restrictions](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/kootenay/bulletins/6df80500-31f2-4a8a-9454-6d7c1ef87319?ref=thebanffguide.com).

## Jasper National Park

**Caribou conservation closures start on 1 November**

Seasonal closures in the Tonquin and À la Pêche caribou ranges run from 1 November 2026 through 15 May 2027 inclusive. Access to the mapped areas is prohibited during that period. Check the boundaries carefully when planning backcountry trips. [Official closure dates and maps](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/bulletins/f5abd01d-f731-497e-ab08-8425b6e1f000?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Opal Hills: wildlife closure**

The Opal Hills hiking area remains closed until further notice because a female grizzly and two offspring are in the area. [Official Opal Hills notice](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/bulletins/ab00395d-6f8d-4c3e-b8bd-226f890956f0?ref=thebanffguide.com).

**Wildfire recovery: important access restrictions remain**

The wildfire-area notice lists Edith Cavell Road and its trails as closed. It also prohibits access to Maligne Canyon trails and surrounding land from First Bridge parking lot to the Fifth Bridge junction, including winter recreation in the canyon.

Wabasso Campground remains closed, while access to Wapiti Campground is restricted to loops AA to H. This notice describes closure boundaries, rather than confirming seasonal campsite availability. ## Before you head out

For the Icefields Parkway, Parks Canada requires snow tyres or chains from 1 November to 31 March, and at other times when the road is covered in snow or ice. Check the [official winter driving guidance](https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/activ/experience/hiver-winter/pcghiver-ipwinter/pcg-securite-safety-ip?ref=thebanffguide.com) before travelling.
