- Description: A bride on the staircase, a bellman still on shift and a hotel room with a missing door. Meet the ghosts of Banff and Canmore, with a few laughs along the way.

A bride still waiting for her first dance. A bellman who apparently missed the memo about retirement. A hotel room with everything you'd expect, except a door.

Banff and Canmore have enough ghost stories to make a quiet walk back to your room feel considerably longer. Some are sad, some are unsettling, and a few suggest that even the afterlife involves customer service.

These are the Bow Valley's local legends. Pull up a chair. Preferably one that's already empty.

## The Ghost Bride of Banff Springs

The [Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel](https://thebanffguide.com/fairmont-banff-springs-hotel-guide/) hardly needs help looking the part. A castle in the mountains is a promising start for any ghost story. Add a staircase and a woman in white, and the ballroom suddenly feels a little less inviting.

In the best-known version of the tale, a bride is making her way down the stairs on her wedding day when she falls. Some tellings blame her dress; others involve candles. The details change, but the wedding never reaches its happy ending.

Then comes the part that keeps the story alive: a figure in a white gown on the staircase, or a bride dancing alone in the ballroom, still waiting for the first dance she never had.

Her legend even made it onto a [Royal Canadian Mint coin](https://www.mint.ca/en/shop/coins/2014/haunted-canada-ghost-bride-2014?ref=thebanffguide.com). Most wedding favours don't have quite that staying power.

## Sam the Bellman: Still on Shift

If you have to meet a ghost in a hotel corridor, Sam sounds like the one to hope for.

His story involves a helpful bellman who appears when guests need directions or help with a stubborn door. He sorts things out, then disappears before they can properly thank him.

The unsettling bit comes afterwards, when the description matches a member of staff who is no longer alive.

According to [Fairmont's own account](https://www.fairmont.com/en/hotels/banff/fairmont-banff-springs/ghost-stories.html?ref=thebanffguide.com), Sam's legend was inspired by a real bellman. The stories have simply kept him on the rota rather longer than anyone intended.

No rattling chains. No threats. Just a man who apparently looked at eternity and thought there was probably someone on the next floor who needed a hand.

## Room 873: A Missing Door and a Very Full Backstory

A bride and a bellman are one thing. A room that appears to have vanished is harder to walk past without slowing down.

Room 873 is the hotel's great missing-room legend. In its darker retellings, a family dies violently, disturbing things happen afterwards, and the room is sealed away. Screams and handprints sometimes join the story, depending on who's telling it.

It's an efficient little nightmare: whatever was in there was apparently troubling enough that someone decided a wall was the answer.

Fairmont gives a more reassuring explanation. Two smaller rooms were joined into a larger suite during renovations, leaving one doorway redundant. The door went; a hallway light stayed.

That is sensible. Sensible explanations also have an unfortunate habit of leaving your head the moment you hear a noise at midnight.

One request from the living: don't knock on walls or go hunting through guest corridors. There are people trying to sleep on the other side. They paid for a room, not a supporting role in your paranormal investigation.

## The Bartender Who Calls Last Orders

![Monochrome image of a smiling bartender in a waistcoat and bow tie holding a glass behind a bar.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/a0/ea/a0ea59ec-2cdb-41f0-a847-04d7917f92a9/content/images/2026/08/ghostly-bar-tender-2.jpg)

The Friendly Bar Tender Who Never Left ...... **Illustrative image.*

Another of the hotel's [ghostly tales](https://www.hauntedplaces.org/item/banff-springs-hotel/?ref=thebanffguide.com) involves a bartender who appears to tell guests they've had enough to drink and should head to bed.

There are worse hauntings than someone suggesting you call it a night. Still, being cut off by a dead man would put a fairly abrupt end to the evening.

You might argue with a bartender about one more drink. You'd probably argue less if you could see through him.

## Bankhead: The Town That Left

A short trip out of Banff brings you to [Bankhead ghost town](https://thebanffguide.com/bankhead-ghost-town-banff/), where the buildings have mostly gone and the name does a fair amount of the work.

The coal-mining community was abandoned in 1922\. Today, the remains of the town and its old industrial structures give you plenty to look at, and even more to imagine.

This is a different sort of eerie. Picture the noise of a working town, then look at the quiet space it left behind. A foundation becomes someone's home. A piece of machinery becomes a shift underground.

You don't need a figure in a window to find that unsettling. The missing windows are doing quite well on their own.

Visit in daylight and stick to the marked trail. Your imagination can handle the night shift.

## Lisa: Canmore's Smallest Ghost

Canmore's ghost stories can make an ordinary building feel much less ordinary. Take the recreation centre.

The story goes that a little girl drowned in the swamp beneath what became the town's recreation complex. Her name is Lisa, and she isn't always quiet.

One version told on a [Canmore ghost walk](https://www.familyfuncanada.com/unraveling-ghostly-and-natural-mysteries-in-canmore/?ref=thebanffguide.com) has a Zamboni operator working alone at night when strange noises turn into a child's cries for her mother. After that, he refuses to work alone.

It's easy to see why this one sticks. A vast haunted castle practically announces its intentions. A rec centre is somewhere you go expecting hockey, exercise and a vending machine.

A small voice in an otherwise empty building is a rather different proposition.

## The Mine Manager's House: A Ghost Who Likes Company

Not every Canmore spirit seems interested in sending you running.

One of the [local ghost-walk favourites](https://banffcanmoreghostwalks.ca/about-us?ref=thebanffguide.com) is a friendly, helpful spirit with a fondness for a party. The Mine Manager's House apparently has the sort of ghost who'd be pleased to see you.

Built in 1907 for Walter F. McNeill, the house was [known for its lively social gatherings](https://stories.canmoremuseum.com/places/mine-managers-house/?ref=thebanffguide.com). A sociable ghost seems quite at home in the story.

Some spirits can't bear to leave unfinished business. This one sounds more concerned that everyone has gone home too early.

## Hear the Stories on a Ghost Walk

Ghost stories are easier to laugh off when you're reading them on the sofa. Hearing one outside, with a guide pausing just long enough for you to notice the darkness, is another matter.

For dates and booking, [see the Banff ghost walk](https://go.thebanffguide.com/banff-ghost-walk?ref=thebanffguide.com). The linked Banff tour lasts around 1 hour 45 minutes. [Banff Canmore Ghost Walks](https://banffcanmoreghostwalks.ca/?ref=thebanffguide.com) also lists walks in Canmore. Check the location and meeting details for the tour you choose.

Bring layers and comfortable shoes: these are outdoor walks, rather than trips through the hotel's guest rooms. The stories are aimed at ages eight and up, with some mature themes.

Then head somewhere warm and well lit. You can decide how much of it you believe over a drink.

And if an unusually helpful bellman appears on the way back, do try to say thank you before he disappears.
